Ruth Stein (nee Tipperman) of Warminster, PA died of natural causes on May 20 at the age of 92. Ruth was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 11, 1927, a daughter of the late Benjamin Tipperman and Eva (Finkelstein) Sheinfeld. Ruth graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn in 1945 and she married Harold Stein (deceased) on February 1, 1948. Ruth and Harold moved to the Springfield, MA area in 1953 and Ruth lived in or near Springfield until she moved to an independent living facility in Pennsylvania in 2019. Ruth raised three sons, Robert (deceased), David and Michael. After Michael left home for college, Ruth enrolled at Westfield State College and received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1982, where she was elected to the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. Along with Harold, she founded the Western Massachusetts chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a grassroots organization that supports those struggling with mental illness and their families. Ruth was a tireless advocate for the mentally ill and helped countless families with her patient and resolute support. Her family and friends loved her for her kindness, generosity and modesty. Those who knew her best saw her quiet but fierce determination to do what was right and to take care of herself and the people around her. In addition to her two surviving sons, Ruth leaves behind a daughter-in-law, Laurie Butler, and one grandchild, Ellyn Butler, as well as many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Phil and Herb Tipperman, predeceased her. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to send a donation to NAMI of Western Massachusetts, 324 A Springfield St., Agawam, MA 01001. The Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home is helping the family.
