The criminal investigation into Cristiano Ronaldo's rape allegation is still active, the Las Vegas Metro Police Dept. says.
Kathryn Mayorga, the woman behind the allegations, had dropped her civil case filed in state court in Nevada earlier this month -- making some people wonder if the two sides had reached a settlement.
But, Mayorga's attorney, Larissa Drohobyczer, says Kathryn is NOT backing down -- they're simply moving the lawsuit from state court to federal court, where it's easier to sue someone who lives abroad.
"We basically just switched venues but the claims and lawsuit still remains," Drohobyczer tells TMZ Sports.
In other words, Mayorga's team was having trouble serving Ronaldo with the court papers -- but the laws in federal court are more favorable for a person suing someone who lives out of the country.
Per Drohobyczer, they are still waiting for confirmation from the Italian government that Ronaldo has been served with the lawsuit.
As we previously reported, Mayorga claims Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room back in 2009.
She had initially filed a police report describing the alleged crime -- but didn't identify Ronaldo by name.
In her original lawsuit, Mayorga says she later accepted a $375,000 payment in exchange for her silence -- but now, she wants that agreement voided.
The Las Vegas Metro Police Dept. reopened the case -- but so far, no charges have been brought against the soccer star.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been served with federal court papers in the lawsuit Kathryn Mayorga brought upon him, alleging that he raped her in 2009.
It was reported that Mayorga recently withdrew her lawsuit from the state court in Nevada as the rigid laws associated with the state court meant that it was getting hard for her legal team to advance proceedings.
TMZ now reports that her team has served Cristiano Ronaldo with federal court papers so that the case can move forward.
Ronaldo’s team of lawyers have also drawn up their own court papers asking for the judge permission to file a 46-page document which will serve to exonerate their client and have the case dismissed.
Ronaldo, 34, had allegedly settled with Mayorga in a non disclosure agreement worth $375,000 on the back of the incident in the Las Vegas night club in 2009.
However, Mayorga wanted to void that agreement and filed a lawsuit against him in October of 2018, stating that she was still in a ‘fragile emotional state’ due to the incident.
Cristiano Ronaldo recently won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, following up with the Italian Super Copa and the Serie A titles that he won with Juventus.
Following the match, he hinted that he should be part of the Ballon d’Or 2019 conversation due to the number of trophies he’s managed to win this season.

LAS VEGAS — Cristiano Ronaldo’s new Las Vegas lawyer says claims that the soccer star raped a woman are “complete fabrications” and the encounter was consensual.
Attorney Peter S. Christiansen on Wednesday issued a statement that doesn’t deny Ronaldo and the woman reached a non-disclosure agreement in 2010.
The statement declared that documents cited in media reports about Ronaldo’s Las Vegas hotel penthouse encounter in 2009 with Kathryn Mayorga were altered before being “irresponsibly published.” related linksAmid rape case, Ronaldo asks for space to celebrate goal Cristiano Ronaldo ready to play for Juventus amid rape allegation Ronaldo’s rape accuser has PTSD, depression: Lawyers Ronaldo left off Portugal squad for upcoming matches Vegas lawyer: Cristiano Ronaldo rape accuser ’emotionally fragile’
Mayorga’s attorneys did not immediately respond to messages.
A lawsuit filed Sept. 27 in Nevada state court seeks to void the non-disclosure agreement that Mayorga’s attorneys say she signed while accepting US$375,000 to keep quiet.
Las Vegas police say they have reopened a sexual assault investigation of the encounter between Ronaldo and Mayorga.

Why Don’t We Talk about Cristiano Ronaldo the Way We Should?
A larger than life image carries real life consequence
On June 5, the media reported that rape charges filed against Cristiano Ronaldo by Kathryn Mayorga had been dropped. The report turned out to be false, as the charges had only been shifted to a federal (union) court from a state court in the US.
On the same night, Ronaldo played against Switzerland in the Nations League and scored a hattrick. There were no mentions of the sexual assault charges in the many Facebook and Twitter conversations about him, or in the hundreds of posts praising this football genius.
It would be foolish to expect a mature and sensitive response from the largely patriarchal or anti-feminist world of football, but these brazen attempts to brush the matter under the rug are deeply problematic.
Juventus, the club Ronaldo plays for, came out with statements supporting him and talking about his “professionalism and dedication” as a “great champion” in addressing the allegations when they first surfaced.
No professional footballer has said anything in public about the case. Most of Ronaldo’s supporters came rushing to his defence, favouring his version of events over Mayorga’s, and others while recognising the gravity of the charges aggressively advocated the separation of Ronaldo’s playing and his alleged crime, calling it a “personal” matter.
The football universe has repeatedly shown itself to be a toxic space for anyone who won’t conform to racial, gender, or religious norms. Moise Kean, a striker at Juventus, was racially abused by fans. His teammate Leonardo Bonucci responded by saying that the blame was 50-50, and that Moise shouldn’t have acted in the manner that he did.
Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling spoke out publicly about the racist treatment he and other players of African origin receive from the British press, particularly the tabloids.
As football fans, and fans of all sports, we need to hold players accountable for their actions and realise that the “larger than life” image we afford them, has real life consequences.
Uncomfortable conversations about the inherent misogyny and racism in sports must take place, and for that, the discussion must shift from the offenders to the victims’ point of view.
The huge power imbalance between accuser and accused is evident from the fact that conversations around the incident have been focused on what it might mean for the footballer and his career. No one is talking about Kathryn Mayorga who, inspired by the MeToo movement, finally built the courage to come out with her story after nine years.
Football fans and the international media reacted similarly to a more recent incident, in which Najila Trindade accused the Brazilian footballer Neymar of sexually assaulting her on May 15, 2019. The matter was swept under the carpet quite as hurriedly as Ronaldo’s, with the news cycle moving onto “more pressing” matters such as Neymar’s inclusion in the list of highest paid athletes.
Neymar and Trindade both took to the social media to produce evidence in support of their versions of the incident. Neymar’s fans, however, have ignored the information put out by Trindade and are taking the footballer’s word as gospel. Seemingly numerous and loud, they are hiding behind the gory details of the incident, and are privileging his story over Trindade’s.
Any claim made by Neymar or Ronaldo in their respective cases gets disproportionate coverage and backing, tipping the scales further in their favour in the court of public opinion. Football fans (most of them men) seem to want to continue idolising these players, and so any version of events which disrupts that image, even police charges filed by a survivor of assault, is rejected or ignored.
There have been large strides in making football a more inclusive sphere, with the movements in women’s football for equal pay, the increasing (yet still inadequate) coverage of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, and consistent efforts by most clubs to discourage racist behaviour amongst their fans.
But it’s us fans who must be at the forefront in shedding the accusations of sexism justifiably levelled at all sports.
Sreelata S.Yellamraju, a sports writer and contributor to The Citizen, links the Ronaldo incident to the misogyny prevalent in other domains. “There are similarities to how Cristiano Ronaldo’s case is being handled in the largely male-dominated media, as was the case with Chris Gayle in the world of cricket.
“Irrespective of these larger-than-life sportspersons and their gargantuan records, it appears that there is a deliberate attempt, now more than ever, to delineate and preserve the aura of the sportsman - or even the male sports editor.
“Without touching upon the misdemeanours that have a psychological effect on one half of the world's population, this is no way to address an issue, by pretending it never happened. It’s only going to become a bigger problem, now that the other half of the population has entered sports and sports reporting on a larger scale.”

CRISTIANO Ronaldo has been served with court papers in a lawsuit brought by a woman who alleges he raped her, it has been reported.
The 34-year-old Juventus and Portugal star has been accused by Kathryn Mayorga of raping her in a Las Vegas hotel after they met in a night club.

It was reported she recently dropped the case she brought against him in Nevada court in order to bring the case to a federal court.
According to TMZ, the footballer has now been served with papers in a federal court.
It was reported Ms Mayorga’s legal team were unable to serve the complaint in the Nevada court.
Ronaldo has strongly denied the claims and the celebrity website said the footballer’s legal team have responded to the lawsuit a 46-page court document of their own.
Ms Mayorga met Ronaldo - then a 24-year-old Manchester United ace - at nightclub in Vegas in 2009.
Footage showed them dancing in the VIP area of Rain nightclub - inside the glamorous Palms Casino Resort - where then 25-year-old Ms Mayorga worked.
She claims the £100million star then raped her in his luxury suite before paying her £295,000 in “hush money”.
DENIES ACCUSATIONS
Ms Mayorga filed a complaint last September alleging she was sexually assaulted.
She claimed though she agreed to a settlement with Ronaldo after the alleged assault, she was suffering severe emotional trauma at the time.
Following the lawsuit, Vegas police reopened an investigation of the rape allegations, making headlines around the world.
The New York Times then reported in January that law enforcement officials had requested a sample of the star’s DNA from Italian cops.
Ronaldo has emphatically denied all the explosive claims.
At the time they emerged, he tweeted: "I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me.
"Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.

1. Leo Goodwin, GEICO
GEICO, or the Government Employee’s Insurance Company, is now a well-known car insurance brand with well-known advertising figures. But before the Gecko, the Caveman or Maxwell, GEICO was the idea of Leo Goodwin. Working as an accountant in San Antonio, Texas, in the 1930’s, Goodwin realized that insurance needed an overhaul. Why weren’t companies just dealing with customers directly, saving all the money that traditionally went to brokers?
In 1936, at the age of 50, Leo founded GEICO in Washington, D.C. In a departure from most businessmen of the day, he worked closely with his wife Lillian in running the company. By the end of the year, GEICO had 12 people on staff and 3,700 policies in force. Today, GEICO employs over 27,000 people and has over 14 million policyholders.
